Leyte, eye-witness account from Gen. Robert Eichelberger

Pacific Paratrooper

Gen. Douglas MacArthur, left, Lt. Gen. Robert L. Eichelberger, right.

“Eighth Army took over Leyte on Christmas Day.  There were 8 divisions fighting there when I assumed command.  When the 32nd Div. and 1st Cavalry broke through on a narrow front, GHQ described the Leyte campaign as officially closed and future operations as “mopping-up.”

“Actually, the Japanese Army was still intact.  I was told there were only 6,000 Japanese left on the island.  This estimate was in serious error.  Soon, Japanese began streaming across the Ormoc Valley, well equipped and apparently well-fed.  It took several months of the roughest kind of combat to defeat this army.  Between Christmas Day and the end of the campaign, we killed more than 27,000 Japanese.

“Many others, evacuated safely by bancas (small boats), and reappeared to fight the 8th Army on other islands.  I called these…

India Cities Ban Eggs, Drawing a Backlash – The New York Times

The place of the humble egg in the street food culture of Gujarat, a state in western India where people take their snacks seriously, has become the latest flash point in the growing role of religion in everyday life. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has a Hindu nationalist base, the national government has taken steps in recent years to promote the religion and to sideline Muslims and other groups.

Emboldened local governments have followed suit, enacting rules in some places that adhere closely to Hindu doctrine. That is especially true in Gujarat, which Mr. Modi led for 13 years before becoming prime minister and which is often seen as a laboratory for pushing policies to reshape India along his Hindu nationalist vision. Those include tightening a ban on alcohol and adding protections against the slaughter of cattle, which many Hindus consider sacred.

But even devout Hindus don’t always agree among themselves what practices the faithful should follow, a conflict that also raises issues of income and class. Hence the bitter disagreement over eggs.

APO Group – Africa Newsroom / Press release | Ghanaian doctor wins globally recognised award for his work on river blindness

Professor Daniel Adjei Boakye, a doctor who has devised a project to map out how river blindness is transmitted between villages in the Oti region has won a Falcon Award for Disease Elimination. The five winners were announced yesterday by the Global Institute for Disease Elimination (GLIDE) during a Universal Health Coverage Day event at EXPO 2020 Dubai.

Professor Boakye will carry out a series of targeted field studies in the Oti Region to refine the multi-village model for preventing river blindness and identify the best treatment strategies for the disease.

Results from the study will also help in redefining transmission zones for other neglected tropical diseases programmes, ensuring these zones are targeted with specific interventions to accelerate the elimination of diseases.

🎄 Holly, Jolly Monday 🎅🏾

Filosofa's Word

Good Monday morn, friends!  Less than two weeks now until Christmas … I’ve done all my shopping online this year, as I’ve not been well enough to go out shopping, and the girls are doing all my wrapping, as well as the holiday baking.  I’m determined to roast a turkey with all the trimmings for us to share with our dear friends the al-Dabbaghs on Christmas, but more and more I think that may be an unreasonable goal to set for myself.  Well, I’ve got two weeks to whip myself into shape, so we’ll see.  But for today, Jolly ‘n Joyful and I have some fun things to help you start this week with a smile, or perhaps even a chuckle or a giggle!  So, grab a snack and a cuppa something warm to drink and let’s find some fun, shall we?

What say we start the morning with a…
