BirdsCaribbean Expresses Alarm at the Escalation of Illegal Bird Trafficking in Cuba

Petchary's Blog

Wildlife trafficking breaks my heart. Now, BirdsCaribbean has discovered that a huge online trade in wild birds has escalated in Cuba.

Here is their press release:

December 21, 2021—BirdsCaribbean is extremely concerned at the drastic increase in the capture and trafficking of wild birds in Cuba over the past two years, and is urging the Cuban Government to enforce laws put in place to curb the practice.

The economic strain brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic has spurred a return to the centuries-old tradition of trapping and selling birds as a way to make a living –  and it has reached unprecedented levels, putting already declining populations of birds at risk. These birds are sold on social media platforms, in particular Facebook and WhatsApp.

The colorful Painted Bunting is one of the most popular

Vivaldi translation of title: Violence Against Women is a public health problem: Let’s talk about it?

Pensamentos.me/VEM comigo!

A violência contra a mulher é um problema que durante séculos, se faz presente em nossa sociedade. Portanto, mais do que nunca, é preciso tocar nesse tema, que é delicado e ao mesmo tempo, necessário para que abra lugar ao debate.

Remembering Role Models

Inspiring Critical Thinking and Community via Books, Lessons, and Story

Today is the birthday, in 1896, of my Great Aunt Sr. Felix fka Margarita Manzilla, (I have more complete information on Ancestry, if you need an invitation link: I no longer have a paid membership…)  a member of the Oblate Sisters of Providence, one of the first and few orders to admit Colored Women at that time.  She is part of the inspiration for my novel in progress, Book I of my historical fantasy series: Who By Fire.

She, along with my great grandmother, who was the baby of the family, and her four siblings survived the murder of my great great grandfather, their ejection from their home in OK, and the death, shortly after, of my great great grandmother in KS, where they were all entered into orphanages (the two boys in one, and the three girls in another).  They all became Catholics, in those Catholic…
