Jamaica undertakes major assessment of its food systems ahead of global UN Food Systems Summit

Petchary's Blog

Another important event tomorrow: the opening of consultations in Kingston on an assessment of Jamaica’s food systems – in other words, agricultural production and output. The workshop is organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Planning Institute of Jamaica. You can watch the opening ceremony on the PIOJ’s Facebook page tomorrow (Tuesday, September 7) at 9:00 a.m. Jamaica time.

There are all kinds of issues associated with food, these days: there is not only food security (how are we going to feed ourselves?) but there is an environmental aspect (more and more so) to food production. Then there is food storage and food processing. Then there is food waste – a terribly important but often ignored issue. Just a couple of days ago I watched this very informative and thought-provoking featureon Al Jazeera on the latter topic, and I recommend it. There are solutions…

So, what…

The leaders of the seven countries that are part of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) are considering amending their respective constitutions to promote laws requiring their own citizens to be vaccinated against Covid-19. The countries are Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Montserrat. The position of these seven nations is detailed in a confidential 16-page report entitled “The Legal Dimensions of the Mandatory Requirements for covid-19 Vaccination by August 2021,” prepared by two Caribbean legal scholars.

Hospitalizations Associated with COVID-19 Among Children and Adolescents — COVID-NET, 14 States, March 1, 2020–August 14, 2021 | MMWR

Weekly COVID-19–associated hospitalization rates among children and adolescents rose nearly five-fold during late June–mid-August 2021, coinciding with increased circulation of the highly transmissible SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant. The proportions of hospitalized children and adolescents with severe disease were similar before and during the period of Delta predominance. Hospitalization rates were 10 times higher among unvaccinated than among fully vaccinated adolescents.

Videos show about 1,000 UVic students partying despite COVID-19 health risk | Globalnews.ca (Me Too Many Canadian and US College students have no clue?)

A huge outdoor party at the University of Victoria on Sunday night is raising questions about the lack of COVID-19 restrictions as students head back to school.

Saanich police said about 1,000 people, most of them with no masks on, were crowded together for the party.

This week, the University of Victoria is implementing a program requiring all students, staff and faculty to confidentially declare their vaccination status.

Covid-19: Dr Siouxsie Wiles on mask wearing in alert level 2 | RNZ News – New Zealand

If you encountered someone with Covid-19 but you have a mask on, you get home and touch your mask then your face … can you get it that way?

“All of the transmission we know of so far really has been from breathing virus particles in. You can get other viruses that way so it’s certainly not something that I would say is not a risk. It’s another really good reason for washing your hands before you touch your face, try to avoid touching your face. Because not only will you prevent potentially Covid-19 but lots of other infections too.”

What are the best masks to get?

“Any mask is better than no mask, I think the research is showing surgical masks are better than cloth masks but cloth masks are better than nothing.”

¿Sirve de algo?

Vivaldi translation: Absent from feelings and perhaps intoxicated by the envy and indifference that embitters them, imprison them and drag them into suffocating gaps, some people are unable to congratulate people who succeed in some aspect of their existence; However, their behaviors are absurd and contradictory when attending the funerals of those who were denied words of recognition and embracing the mourners and making speeches before the coffins that only contain spoils. Is it of any use to bring flowers, hug the relatives of the deceased and remember biographies, when you were unable to hug, smile and congratulate people who are no longer there?
