Indigenous Brazilians Seek Genocide Charges Against President Bolsonaro at International Court – Havana Times

A coalition of Indigenous groups from Brazil is asking the International Criminal Court to investigate far-right Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, accusing him of carrying out an explicit, systematic and intentional anti-Indigenous policy. In a statement, the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil said, “We believe there are acts in progress in Brazil that constitute crimes against humanity, genocide and ecocide. Given the inability of the justice system in Brazil to investigate, prosecute and judge these conducts, we denounce them to the international community.” Bolsonaro has consistently supported mining, agriculture, and oil and gas projects on Indigenous lands and has repeatedly made racist comments about Indigenous peoples.

Goodbye Cuomo, Hello Hochul … WHO???

Filosofa's Word

Well, folks, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo did what he said he wouldn’t do … he resigned.  I have mixed feelings … certainly it was the right thing to do in light of all the credible accusations of sexual harassment against him, not to mention a looming impeachment.  He was correct when he said that the last thing government needs is to be distracted, and he has, of late, become a distraction not only for the State of New York, but for the nation.  Still, I was a bit sad, for he has done much good during his eleven years in office and was the voice of reason during the height of the pandemic, the antithesis to the former president’s lies.  His father, Mario Cuomo, governed New York for eleven years, from 1983 to 1994, and was a popular governor, as has been Andrew until recent events.

In two weeks…

Washington governor orders vaccines for state employees, health care workers | TheHill

Under Inslee’s order, state employees and contractors working on projects within the state will have until Oct. 18 to provide proof of vaccination. Exceptions will only be allowed for medical or religious reasons, according to The Seattle Times.

Those employees who do not have a valid reason — political or philosophical objections and not considered valid reasons under the policy — will face “nondisciplinary dismissal” if they do not meet the vaccination deadline, Inslee’s office told the newspaper.

Local government officials including Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan (D) and King County Executive Dow Constantine (D) have also taken a stance to require vaccinations for city and county employees. Seattle police, state social workers, county jail employees and local road crews will reportedly be mandated to get vaccinated in alignment with Inslee’s order.

Military display rolls into Brazil capital before tense vote – The Washington Post

The parade upset some lawmakers. Omar Aziz, the president of a Senate probe into the government’s COVID-19 pandemic response, said the parade was “a clear attempt to intimidate lawmakers and opponents. He (Bolsonaro) imagines he is showing strength, but he is showing a president weakened by investigations.”

Critics allege that Bolsonaro, who trails rivals in early opinion polls, is trying to sow doubt among his passionate supporters about the 2022 election results, setting the stage for potential conflicts similar to those spawned by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s allegations of fraud in the United States.
