Egypt lets journalists, activists go after US concerns – The Washington Post

Egyptian authorities released three activists and three journalists Sunday after months in pre-trial detention, officials and lawyers said. The releases came after U.S. officials, among others, expressed concern over the arrests and harassment of rights advocates and critics of President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi’s government.

State security prosecutors ordered the release of the six pending ongoing investigations into charges against them, according to two judicial officials. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

Boris and Rishi Sunak backpedal after initially saying they would skip quarantine – The Washington Post

First, the new British Health Secretary Sajid Javid — three weeks on the job, in the middle of an explosion in cases, who had declared it was time to “live with the virus”— announced on Saturday that he’d tested positive for the coronavirus and would self-isolate.

Then on Sunday, both Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Finance Minister Rishi Sunak said they’d been alerted by the National Health Service that since they had been in close contact with an infected individual — i.e., Javid — they must immediately quarantine at home.

The quarantine of the top leadership in a British government struggling to manage the pandemic comes less than 24 hours before Johnson plans to end almost all government mandates in England for mask-wearing and social distancing. On Monday, dubbed “Freedom Day” by the press, it will be a “personal choice” whether to mask or distance in most settings. A number of health experts have condemned the opening as a reckless experiment. Others say it is about time — and prudent given the lower numbers of hospitalizations and deaths.

The Pandemic Is Roaring Back Where Vaccination Rates are Low – Mother Jones

On July 17, 2020, more than four months into a global pandemic, Arkansas was averaging 708 new COVID-19 cases per day. One year and three FDA-approved vaccines later, Arkansas is now averaging 1,017 cases per day. The record numbers show what can happen when, despite the spread of a highly infectious new strain of the virus, most people fail to get fully vaccinated.

Only 44 percent of adults in the state are fully vaccinated, compared to 59 percent across the nation.

Keep wearing masks to slow spread of Covid, scientists warn Britons | Coronavirus | The Guardian

“If you don’t wear masks, the virus will spread further. It is as simple as that,” said Julian Tang, a clinical virologist at Leicester University.

Tang said masks clearly limit the spread of viral particles from an infected person and also cut a wearer’s chance of picking up an infection from someone else. “Masks work both ways,” he told the Observer.

“If you assume that a mask at least halves transmission, that means that for every 1,000 virus particles an infected person breathes out, only 500 will leave your mask. Then, when those particles reach someone else, similarly their masks will ensure at least a twofold reduction in the number of viruses reaching their mouths or noses. In other words, of the 1,000 virus particles an infected person has breathed out, only 250 or so will reach another person. That should reduce infection rates, and that is why masks are important.”

Kunst am Stadtweiher

Vivaldi translation of introduction: Art on the city pond
PUBLISHED ON 14. Juli 2021
A special art exhibition could be enjoyed for a week while walking along the Lechenicher city pond. Due to the pandemic, artists had not exhibited their works in traditional white pavilions as usual, but presented reproductions of their works on large banners stretched between the trees or picture posters attached to light poles. Art and nature, the play of light and shadow – a perfect symbiosis in a historical ambience.
