Do laws like Sedition undermine credibility of the World’s largest Democracy?

Beyond The Lines

The British used a Colonial Law called “Sedition” to silence Mahatma Gandhi and Bal Gangadhar Tilak. Were they anti-national?

If questioning the government can land you in prison or charge you with a hearty fine then what is the difference between a democracy and autocracy?

You need to understand that Sedition (Rajdroh) should not be confused with Treason (Deshdroh). There is a clear distinction between the two and must not be used interchangeably.

Sedition as defined in the Indian Penal Code –“Whoever, by words, either spoken or written, or by signs, or by visible representation, or otherwise, brings or attempts to bring into hatred or contempt, or excites or attempts to excite disaffection towards, the government established by law in India, shall be punished with imprisonment which may extend to three years, to which a fine may be added; or, with fine.”

On Fire, Once Again …

Filosofa's Word

Just like last year and the year before, wildfires are raging out of control in the Western states such as California, Oregon, and to a lesser extent, Washington. One such in Oregon has been named the Bootleg Fire, presumably for the shape of the path of destruction it is leaving.

By now, there can be no doubt … NO DOUBT … that these fires are as a result of humans’ complete disregard of the environment for more than a century, leading to what we now know as ‘climate change’. However, the people in a swath of towns along the fire’s likely trajectory remain deniers of man-made climate change. Though urged by fire officials to evacuate the area, despite having to spend days and nights under a thick blanket of smoke, water down their yards and watch the wind for signs that the flames may be shifting, they are adamant that…

Pensamentos.me/VEM comigo!

I haven’t re-blogged TokyoSand’s weekly cartoon posts for the past couple of weeks because the ‘toons seemed just too dark.  Not TS’ fault at all, but just a statement of the way things are these days … it’s hard to find humour in things some days.  However, I found this week’s to be grin-worthy and wanted to share them with you. This is just a sampling, so be sure to head over to TokyoSand’s place to see the rest!  Many thanks, TS, for all you do in always finding us the best and most relevant ‘toons!

‘I tried to be tough,’ says survivor of Marieval Indian Residential School sharing her story for 1st time | CBC News

For six years, Kretschmer’s days were filled with catechism and cleaning. She said the education component was almost non-existent, but she did learn to read and write.

“We never learned anything about our culture, or to be proud of our identity,” said Kretschmer.

Fortunately, she said her grandmother took her to ceremonies and powwows, despite there being a federal ban on Indigenous ceremonies and all Indigenous practices from 1885 until 1951.

For a young child, residential school was not only a lonely place, but a frightening one.

Kretschmer still doesn’t understand how adults could treat children so harshly. She said the worst part of the ordeal was never knowing why things happened, especially the abnormally cruel punishments.
