ore de drum

San Giovanni Rotondo, 2019

Good People Doing Good Things — Donnel Baird

Hope this inspires others to follow his lead and start new and related efforts!!!

Filosofa's Word

Today’s good people is a bit different than the ones I usually write about on Wednesday mornings.  He didn’t pull a child from in front of an oncoming train, nor renovate an elderly person’s home for free, but what he has done will have a lasting positive impact on the lives of potentially thousands of people and … at the same time, he is helping the environment.  I am posting today’s ‘Good People’ directly from The Washington Post, for I could not possibly have done any better job in writing about this good person, Donnel Baird.

Donnel Baird kept his coat on while he toured the aging sanctuary. His breath froze on his face mask as he took in the peeling plaster, the dusty basement, the failing boiler that never seemed able to make Bright Light Baptist Church warm.

But when he peered into the kitchen, the shiver he…

Derek Chauvin Motions For New Trial

We Hold These Truths To Be Self-Evident

Minneapolis ex-cop Derek Chauvin was convicted of 2nd degree murder, 3rd degree murder, and 2nd degree manslaughter for killing George Floyd.  On April 30, 2021, state prosecutors and Chauvin’s defense attorney argued in separate filings whether certain conditions should be considered in Chauvin’s sentencing.  The prosecution’s filing argues 5 aggravated factors for consideration.  Chauvin is scheduled to be sentenced on June 16 or 25, 2021, depending on what source you read.   Chavin’s opposition for aggravating sentencing factors is linked here.

On May 4, 2021, Chauvin’s defense attorney filed a motion for a new trial.  The motion is linked here.

I noticed on Twitter that some of Chauvin’s supporters represent the motion is for a mistrial or dismissal, and their presentation is focused on a juror attending a protest.   Chauvin’s motion is for a new trial — a do-over.  According to the Minnesota Rules for Criminal Procedure, Post…

« They soon forgot the beauty of the forest! » | Barbara Crane Navarro

«They began greedily tearing minerals out of the ground. They built factories to melt them and make great quantities of merchandise.

They told themselves: Aren’t our hands so skilled to craft these things? We are the only ones who are so clever! We truly are the people of merchandise!

They made money proliferate everywhere. By wanting to possess all this merchandise, they were seized by a limitless desire.

It was with these words of merchandise that the white people started cutting all the trees, mistreating the land and soiling the water courses.

They do it out of jealousy for gold. »

Palata Potala, Lasa, Kina – Potala Palace, Lhasa, China

The history of Potala begins with the brotherhood of the mountain population and China. In the 7th century, King Songcen Gampo built a palace on top of the Red Mountain, 4,047 meters high, which dominates Lhasa, in honor of a Chinese princess given to him as a wife by one of the emperors of the Tang dynasty. That marriage also brought Buddhism to Tibet. The palace was named Potala, after a mountain in southern India that was home to bodhisattvasAvalokiteshvara, the patron saint of Tibet.

Myrela

The Faces of Surprise Medical Billing

Good look in on how out health system drives us… to places we did not want to go.

CRAIN'S COMMENTS

Again, those who live in countries with universal health care can chuckle. Others can simply cry.

What is a surprise bill?

Health insurance in the US has migrated toward a “health maintenance organization” system. Doctors and laboratories who are in network agree to the fees allowed by the insurer, and are paid by the insurer. Doctors and labs that aren’t in network don’t accept the insurance fees, and aren’t paid by the insurer. Bills for those services go to the consumer.

Most consumers know to check the in-network status when making an appointment with a new doctor — or I help them by consulting insurer directories before they sign up for insurance.

How then can surprises happen?

  1. The doctor orders lab work and uses a lab with which he has a relationship, but the lab it out-of-network with the insurer. Doctors don’t know and often won’t check, so the patient…
