Safe, personalized cancer vaccine shows promise in early trials – Study Finds

A personalized cancer vaccine may sound more like fiction than reality to some. However, researchers from Mount Sinai Hospital report they’ve developed just that with the help of a computational platform. Even better, these personalized vaccines — treating forms of the disease including lung and bladder cancer — appear safe for use and beneficial for patients at high risk of recurrence. These findings come from the initial results of a phase-1 clinical trial involving the vaccines.

“While immunotherapy has revolutionized the treatment of cancer, the vast majority of patients do not experience a significant clinical response with such treatments,” says study author Thomas Marron, MD, PhD, Assistant Director for Early Phase and Immunotherapy Trials at The Tisch Cancer Institute and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, in a media release. “Cancer vaccines, which typically combine tumor-specific targets that the immune system can learn to recognize and attack to prevent recurrence of cancer. The vaccine also contains an adjuvant that primes the immune system to maximize the efficacy.”

Brazil: Remove Miners from Indigenous Amazon Territory | Human Rights Watch

Brazilian federal authorities should immediately remove miners who have unlawfully entered the Munduruku Indigenous territory in the Amazon rainforest, Human Rights Watch said today.

Munduruku Indigenous people in the Tapajós basin – an epicenter of illegal gold mining in the Amazon rainforest – in southwestern Pará state have reported increasing encroachments upon their lands by armed “wildcat” miners known as “garimpeiros” since March 14, 2021. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office has warned of a potential for violence between local residents and the miners and urged the deployment of the federal police and other authorities to remove the trespassers. But the government has yet to act. The tension has escalated in recent weeks after a group of miners brought equipment to the area. Opinion | Every Covid-19 Death Leaves Behind a Circle of Grief – The New York Times

We first need to get a sense of the scope of our national grief. Researchers are just beginning to count the bereaved, and while current estimates suggest five million Americans have lost a loved one to Covid-19, the final tally is likely to be much larger.

Ashton Verdery, an associate professor of sociology and demography at Pennsylvania State University, recently led a study that introduced the Covid-19 Bereavement Multiplier. By his team’s calculus, for every person who dies of Covid-19, nine loved ones are left behind.

France to ban some domestic flights where train available | Air France/KLM | The Guardian

French MPs have voted to suspend domestic airline flights on routes that can be travelled by direct train in less than two and a half hours, as part of a series of climate and environmental measures.

After a heated debate in the Assemblée Nationale at the weekend, the ban, a watered-down version of a key recommendation from President Emmanuel Macron’s citizens’ climate convention was adopted.

It will mean the end of short internal flights from Orly airport, south of Paris, to Nantes and Bordeaux among others, though connecting flights through Charles de Gaulle/Roissy airport, north of the French capital, will continue.

FDA to Deal With Heavy Metals in Baby Food

The FDA will embark on a multiyear program to determine acceptable levels of heavy metals in baby food, in the wake of reports that showed them at high concentrations. The FDA announced its plan, “Closer to Zero,” on April 8. It will evaluate the science and propose appropriate levels for lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic, in consultation with manufacturers, consumers and other stakeholders. The situation became notorious when reports surfaced, including one from a congressional subcommittee, showing high levels of heavy metals in baby and toddler food products from major manufacturers. Legislation was introduced to set limits, and at least five processors were hit with class-action lawsuits in several states.
