Gonzalo Cardona killed in Colombia as environmentalists threatened – The Washington Post

On a January morning in the foothills of the Andes, Gonzalo Cardona Molina gave his daughter a goodbye hug, jumped on his 2015 Yamaha motorcycle and set off for the habitat of the elusive yellow-eared parrot. Cardona had spent two decades nurturing the rare bird, a species once thought extinct. Now, they numbered in the thousands, and he was their protector — the overseer of the wild preserve in this South American nation where they thrived anew. A preserve that happens to abut one of Colombia’s most notorious drug routes. “God willing, I will be coming back to you soon,” the 55-year-old told his daughter. Three days later, a search party found his body in a shallow grave with two bullets in his chest. His slaying was the latest in a deadly wave of killings of environmentalists in Colombia, a nation where they are fast becoming almost as endangered as the species they strive to protect.

The song John Lennon called his “all-time favourite”

The track was a rarely heard number titled ‘Angel Baby’ and originally recorded by Rosie and the Originals in 1960.

The song was originally scheduled to be a part of John Lennon’s iconic covers album Rock ‘n’ Roll, a record which is drenched in infamy for the singer. A contractual agreement, Lennon phoned in some of the covers while others he gave his utmost too. One song that probably landed in the latter category was ‘Angel Baby’, which Lennon provided a rendition for during the sessions.

China, US to set up joint working group on climate change — report | Asia| An in-depth look at news from across the continent | DW | 20.03.2021

Despite media reports that little progress was made during the two-days of dialogue in the Alaskan city of Anchorage, which ended Friday, China’s official Xinhua news agency said Beijing and Washington had decided to set up a working group on climate change.

The agency did not provide any details on the initiative, other than saying both China and the United States are committed to enhancing communication and cooperation.

The talks were the first face-to-face meeting between senior US officials and their Chinese counterparts since President Joe Biden took office earlier this year. They opened with tense and extended exchanges over human rights in front of television cameras, before the officials retreated behind closed doors.

NCAA admits falling ‘short’ in preparations for women’s tournament in San Antonio after viral tweet

The NCAA on Friday morning addressed disparities between the men’s and women’s Division I basketball tournaments after several issues with the women’s tournament in San Antonio surfaced on social media.

Lynn Holzman, NCAA VP of women’s basketball, admitted the NCAA and women’s committee fell short in some areas of preparation prior to the tournament’s start on Sunday.

“We fell short this year in what we’ve been doing to prepare in the last 60 days for 64 teams to be here in San Antonio, and we acknowledge that,” Holzman said.

Holzman specifically addressed a viral tweet and video posted by University of Oregon forward Sedona Prince. In the video, Prince shows a designated training and weight room area at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center with only one set of dumbbells. The video then shows what she said was a men’s training area in Indiana filled with weights and workout machines.

Las Cruces residents included in Phase 1C vaccine category react to eligibility | KDBC

Rebecca O’Brien works at the restaurant The Game Sports Bar and Grill. She has not once stopped working this entire pandemic, but didn’t have a choice because it’s how she provides for her family.

“I mean, a mask and keeping your distance and washing your hands can only do so much,” O’Brien said.

She’s said she’s been registered for the vaccine for months. Knowing she can now receive it feels like a weight has been lifted off her shoulders.

“I’m just extremely excited, I know that people like myself were extremely at risk being among a lot of people, in contact with so many people, so I think it’s a really great thing that we can finally be vaccinated,” O’Brien said.

Another group of people now eligible are those in the media.

Lucas Peerman, the news director for the Las Cruces Sun News said this is a huge milestone for his staff.

“It’s been a year since we’ve been able to go out into the public and interact, and for those of us in media that is a big part of our job, to tell the stories of our community it’s best to be able to interact with our communities. So having the vaccine, not only for us in the media, but for the communities that we’re covering just allows much better coverage of what’s going on,” Peerman said.

Covid lockdown protests

my imagination

This in my opinion is completely stupid, in London there is thousands of people marching in protest against the restrictions of covid lockdowns

We are told that 1 in 3 people who have covid have no symptoms and can still spread the virus to others, how many protesters have got covid in the London marches today and they will be spreading the virus even more.

This sounds very very bad i know but in my opinion maybe all them protesting should get covid and then they will understand why we have the lockdowns.

Come on people, use your brain, lockdowns are there for a reason.

Protect the NHS, protect yourself and your loved ones.
