Biden to house migrant children at Texas facility closed under Trump

In the aftermath of the mass protests across Russia in recent weeks in support of jailed opposition politician Alexey Navalny, a number of protesters in Moscow are serving time in administrative custody. Currently, many of the detainees are being held at a special detention center located in Sakharovo — a village in an area just outside of the Russian capital known as New Moscow. According to multiple reports, police vans carrying detainees have been forced to wait in lines outside of the detention center for hours on end — and the detainees weren’t given food or water while waiting to be processed (they were only allowed out of the van when needed after cajoling the officers transporting them).

“The pandemic requires us to rethink capacity and to be extra cautious about COVID-19 protocol and social distancing, not just in the context of unaccompanied minors but also what processes and staff presence is going to look at a potential facility,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The two other orders signed Tuesday call for placing Trump-era immigration policies under review – rather than outright ending the practices – including the Migrant Protection Protocols, or “remain in Mexico” policy, that forced migrants seeking asylum to wait in Mexico while waiting to plead their case before a judge.

Updated at 6:30 p.m. ET President Biden named more of the team that will tackle the addiction crisis on Wednesday while promising a series of policy actions in the first 100 days. The announcement comes as overdose deaths surge to record levels , topping 81,000 fatalities over the past 12 months, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Regina LaBelle, a veteran drug policy expert who served in the Obama administration, was named deputy director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). In a statement, LaBelle said “mounting rates of overdose deaths and untreated addiction are significant challenges” especially at a time when the Biden team faces other major crises. LaBelle will lead the White House drug policy team until a permanent ONDCP director is named and confirmed by the Senate. Biden also has yet to name a director of the Food and Drug Administration, but he has named California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to head the Health and Human

Found only 3 cm (1.2 in) below the surface, near the base of a tree on a slope leading to what was then known as Bulldog Gully.

Deason, Oates, and a few friends took the nugget to the London Chartered Bank of Australia, in Dunolly, which advanced them £9,000. Deason and Oates were finally paid an estimated £9,381 for their nugget, which became known as the “Welcome Stranger”.

Biden is expected to announce increase in amount of refugees admitted into US

The Biden administration plans to announce on Thursday that it will increase the number of refugees who can come to the United States, a move toward building up refugee admissions after years of historic low arrivals under former President Donald Trump, according to two sources familiar with the plans.

President Joe Biden, who pledged to raise the cap during the campaign, is expected to announce his intention to increase the number of refugees allowed into the US during a visit to the State Department, according to one source. The Trump administration set a refugee cap of 15,000 for this fiscal year, the lowest since 1980. It’s unclear by how much the Biden administration will increase that cap.

The refugee cap must be approved by the president. Biden has pledged to set an annual admissions cap of 125,000, though the plan is to wait until October, when the next fiscal year begins, to set that cap, according to one of the sources.

Lebanon: No Justice 6 Months After Blast | Human Rights Watch

Lebanese authorities have failed in the past six months to deliver any justice for the catastrophic explosion at Beirut’s port on August 4, 2020, Human Rights Watch said today. The stalled domestic investigation, riddled with serious due process violations, as well as political leaders’ attempts to stop the investigation reinforce the need for an independent, international inquiry.

The investigation has been paused since December 17, 2020, after two former ministers charged in the case filed a motion asking Lebanon’s Court of Cassation replace the investigating judge, Fadi Sawan. It is not clear when the investigation will resume. Sawan has, since August, brought charges against 37 people, 25 of whom are detained under conditions that appear to violate their due process rights. Those detained are mostly mid to low-level customs, port, and security officials; and their families and lawyers say that the judicial authorities have not yet presented the specific charges or evidence against them.
