The CEO of Discovery, a health insurer in South Africa, says that more than half of the country has been infected by COVID-19. While the official death rate from the coronavirus is only 48,000, the excess number of deaths for the last 12 months is approaching 140,000. That number is only supportable if more than half of the population were infected.
Discovery said it identified 5,000 among its own members as dying from the virus.
South Africa joins a long list of countries where there has been substantial under-counting of the impact of the coronavirus.
