Joan Armatrading: ‘I was born to do this’

She was the first British female singer-songwriter to achieve international success. Hits such as “Love and Affection” and “Me Myself I” in the 70s made her a household name, but other songs like “Barefoot and Pregnant” now a feminist anthem, and “Rosie” about a transgender character have become cultural landmarks. As Joan Armatrading turns 70, she speaks to Eve Jackson about getting a CBE from the Queen and the UK’s Women of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award, being asked to write a song for Nelson Mandela and how she sees the future of the music industry after the pandemic.

La vida me ha enseñado…

Life has taught me …

From time to time, I extract from the depths of an old file a painting by Fonvizin from an exhibition (Kazimir Malevici, GAMEC, Bergamo, 2015) brought from St. Petersburg.

Beer and crisps used to help tackle climate change – BBC News

Crisps and beer The technology will use CO2 captured from beer fermentation in a brewery, which is then mixed with potato waste and turned into fertiliser.

It will then be spread on UK fields to feed the following year’s potato crop.

Creating fertiliser normally produces high CO2 emissions, but the technology adopted by Walkers makes fertiliser without generating CO2.

So, the beer-and-crisps combo performs a dual function.

It stops the emission of brewery CO2 into the atmosphere – and it saves on the CO2 normally generated by fertiliser manufacture.
