Significant gaps remain between PM and EU commission president Ursula von der Leyen after Brussels dinner

A Brexit deal must be sealed by Sunday or there will be no deal, Boris Johnson and Ursula von der Leyen agreed after a “lively and frank” three-hour summit that set the stage for a dramatic final act of the negotiations.

Despite nine months of troubled talks, “very large gaps” were said to remain between the UK and EU. The leaders said they should come to a deal or no deal outcome by the end of the weekend, with pressure on both sides to find time for parliamentary ratification.

California has most coronavirus deaths in a single day – Los Angeles Times

Tuesday’s death toll, 219, edged out the previous single-day high of 214, which was recorded July 31, according to data compiled by The Times.

The latest figure may be a harbinger of higher death tolls. Until this past week, California had topped 200 daily coronavirus-related deaths only four times. That number has been exceeded twice in the last five days.

Thirty nine years ago, Salvadoran troops commenced a scorched earth operation in the remote, rural community of El Mozote and surrounding hamlets in the department of Morazan in northeast El Salvador.  Over the next few days, with savage brutality, they would slaughter almost 1000 civilians, including more than 400 children under the age of 12, in the worst single massacre in the history of Latin America.

DeSantis appointee resigns in protest of “unconscionable” raid on COVID whistleblower | Salon.com

Filipkowski, a former state and federal prosecutor, said in his resignation letter that he was “increasingly alarmed” by DeSantis’ “reckless and irresponsible” pandemic response but the raid on Jones was “unconscionable.”

Filipowski, a Marine veteran, said that even if Jones was behind the message he would “still call her a hero.” He added that he found the governor’s office claim that DeSantis was unaware of the raid “not credible.”

Jones said on Monday that police pointed guns at her and her family, which the Florida Department of Law Enforcement denied, and seized her computers and hardware that she used to maintain her own coronavirus data dashboard. The FDLE said they traced the source of the message to Jones’ home.

The symptoms were odd for me, but I thought it was a bad case of flu. My wife took ill a couple of days later. Maybe two weeks after that, as I was starting to feel…
