Justices throw out Texas lawsuit that sought to block election outcome – SCOTUSblog

In a brief order issued just before 6:30 p.m., the justices explained that Texas lacked a legal right to sue, known as standing, and did not have a legal interest in how other states carried out their elections. As a result, the court rejected Texas’ lawsuit without considering the merits of the state’s case.

With the Electoral College vote slated to take place in just three days, Friday’s order as a practical matter puts a stop to efforts to contest the results of the election through litigation.

F.D.A. Clears Pfizer Vaccine, and Millions of Doses Will Be Shipped Right Away – The New York Times

Pfizer has told the federal government that it may not be able to provide an additional 100 million doses to the United States before the middle of next year because of agreements it has with other countries. And three other experimental vaccines, developed by Novavax, Sanofi and AstraZeneca, have faced delays in their clinical trials.

Remdesivir combo reduces COVID-19 recovery time | CIDRAP

A combination of the antiviral drug remdesivir and the anti-inflammatory drug baricitinib reduced recovery time and accelerated improvement, especially among patients receiving supplemental oxygen without invasive ventilation, according to a large, international study of hospitalized COVID-19 patients published in the New England Journal of Medicine today.

Severe COVID-19 appears to be associated with an exaggerated inflammatory response in some patients, leading researchers to consider anti-inflammatory medications like baricitinib as potential therapies. Remdesivir, approved by the US Food and Drug Administration on Oct 22 to treat hospitalized COVID patients, has thus far met with mixed results when used alone.

Researchers at 67 trial sites in eight countries, including the United States, randomly assigned 1,033 patients hospitalized with COVID-19–related pneumonia to a treatment group (515) receiving a combination of the two drugs, and a control group (518) receiving only remdesivir and placebo.

With over 500,000 COVID cases, L.A. at ‘catastrophic’ levels – Los Angeles Times

The COVID-19 crisis hit what Los Angeles County officials called “uncharted territory” Friday, as the daily case count surged dramatically to 13,815 and total cases topped 500,000, the latest signs that the virus is spreading with ferocious speed.

“We’re on a very dangerous track to see unprecedented and catastrophic suffering,” said L.A. County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer. “At this point, we’re seeing daily numbers of cases and hospitalizations that we’ve not experienced and, frankly, did not anticipate.”

Editorial: Don’t just deny Texas’ original action. Decimate it. – SCOTUSblog

In a time that is so very deeply polarized, I cannot think of a person, group or institution other than the Supreme Court that could do better for the country right now. Supporters of the president who have been gaslighted into believing that there has been a multi-state conspiracy to steal the election recognize that the court is not a liberal institution. If the court will tell the truth, the country will listen. Source: Editorial: Don’t just deny Texas’ original action. Decimate it. – SCOTUSblog
