Belarus starts legal proceedings against Lukashenko critics | News | DW | 21.12.2020 (sinks further into inhumane autocracy)

Belarus opposition leaders Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, Olga Kovalkova, Maxim Znak, Maria Kolesnikova, Sergei Dylevsky and others are being investigated in relation to forming an “extremist association,” Belarus’ Public Prosecutor’s Office said on Monday.
The office accused the group of forming a “conspiracy” with the objective of seizing control via a coup, the news agency DPA reported.
The criminal proceedings are widely considered as politically motivated as strongman Alexander Lukashenko seeks to silence his opponents.
Government critic Kolesnikova has been in custody since September. The 38-year-old has said security officers put a bag over her head during her arrest and told her she would be taken out of the country “alive or in bits.”

New modeling software is helping animal health experts develop more customizable prosthetics for pets with missing limbs. Still, not all legs are created equal. Photograph: Dive Design Consider the three-legged dog. Maybe you own one, or have seen them in the park or in any of the billions of Dodo videos about them. Lopsided yet resilient, they evoke a kind of fawning […]

The Joshua Bell Experiment (Video)

Over ten years ago, a short, unassuming article was published in one of America’s leading newspapers, the Washington Post. It was about a social experiment that highlighted some harsh truths about the society we live in. Most of the mid-level bureaucrats disembark at L’Enfant Plaza station, located in the heart of federal Washington. On Friday, 12 January 2007, as people slurped coffee and scarfed down doughnuts, as they scurried off to work, an inconspicuous man, in jeans and a T-shirt, stood next to a dustbin inside the station playing a violin.
In a city like Mumbai, it would not be considered highly dignified for someone to play music on the street. The perception in the States is different. They are not part of the aristocracy, but not considered impoverished either. They are just seen as street performers, who can at times attract quite a crowd and media attention.

How to Make Mashed Turnips for a Fantastic Holiday Side Dish
Buckle up everybody, for I am here to defend and exalt turnips. In fact, I’d go so far as to claim that turnips, when mashed, are better than their potato counterparts, and a far more interesting vehicle for gravy. Cooked turnips are firm yet velvety, slightly nutty, and bring a bit more oomph to your holiday spread. But, full disclosure, my not all of my turnip-eating Christmases have been merry.

Orange County obliterates its COVID-19 records – Los Angeles Times
The 4,606 new coronavirus infections announced Sunday shattered the county’s previous one-day high of 3,445, according to data compiled by The Times. There have been 3,000-plus new daily cases logged countywide only five times throughout the entire pandemic — all since Dec. 13.
“The number of infections in our county, in our surrounding counties, has been rising every day,” Dr. Clayton Chau, Orange County’s health officer and Health Care Agency director, said last week. “Every day, we break the record, the number of people who have been infected. So I’m pleading with the community: Please, please do not gather. And make sure you follow the public health guidance because our hospitals are now bombarded.” Source: Orange County obliterates its COVID-19 records – Los Angeles Times
Perdoar e deixar ir
”Forgive, not because your enemies deserve forgiveness. But, because you are the one who needs peace ”.
