ICU doctor: Gatherings are ‘turning hospitals into morgues’ in L.A. County – San Gabriel Valley Tribune

The unrelenting surge of new patients continued on Wednesday with 7,546 COVID-19 patients in L.A. County hospitals, 1,528 of them in intensive care units, based on a state dashboard that also showed the county with just 330 available ICU beds in a county of roughly 10 million people. Intensive care hospitalizations were up 1,000% in the last two months countywide.

At the county’s four DHS hospitals, nearly half of their 1,000 patients were being treated with COVID. Roughly two-thirds of people in ICUs were COVID patients, Ghaly said.

As the numbers of patients in hospitals keep increasing, so, too, do the deaths. More than 10,000 people in L.A. County have now died from COVID-19, amounting to roughly 150 people per day on average this week, nearly matching the 170 on average per day who die of all other causes in L.A. County.
