Brexit negotiations: “We will take back control”, says UK PM Johnson

Ha ha ha ha. He cannot control his own aides, Covid-19, his blustery buffoonery or his party. Big Brexit backer will build new SUV — in France, not UK.

Prime Minister Boris #Johnson will set out over dinner with European Commission President Ursula von der #Leyen on Wednesday that #Britain will not accept any deal which undermines its ability to control its laws and waters, his press secretary said.

Biden’s ‘summit of democracies’ can rally allies against autocracies

Jonas Parello-Plesner
Executive director, Alliance of Democracies Foundation
Copenhagen, Denmark

Joe Biden is right to convene a summit of democracies at a time when autocracies are on the offensive against the free world.

China is picking off democratic states with strategic investments and trying to mould the rules-based order in its image of state subsidies and authoritarian tech. Russia is sparking disorder around the free world with disinformation campaigns, election meddling and corrupt money flows.

If the free world does not show unity, we will continue to dissemble. And a free world divided will not stay free forever.

In her op-ed “Biden’s ‘summit of democracies’ won’t work” (December 8), Shada Islam argues that interests and values often do not align across the free world. This is true, of course — and one of the problems that such a summit would address.

Democratic leaders’ short-term economic priorities have led to dependency. Beijing has exploited divisions between governments when it comes to state-subsidized 5G, for example, or the Belt and Road Initiative and one-sided supply chains.

That is precisely why we need a joined-up response from democracies. The G20, which the author highlights as the gold standard of efficient international cooperation, is not apt for the job. It is stocked with autocratic spoilers.

To counter threats from autocratic powers, we need common initiatives that make the democratic path more economically attractive and enable us to forge common initiatives on 6G, quantum computing and artificial intelligence to serve the cause of freedom. This will be difficult, but the alternative is worse: that tomorrow’s technology serves the cause of Chinese authoritarianism.

Ultimately, we can’t solve election interference with the Russians in the room, or set digital standards while China watches on. Nor should we fall into the trap of seeing a preference for democracy as antagonistic to multilateralism.

A summit of democracies would also give voice to activists fighting for democracy around the world, as in Hong Kong, Venezuela and Belarus. Their fight should be our fight, and we must find ways across the free world to support them.

President-Elect Biden opened the first Copenhagen Democracy Summit and co-founded our Transatlantic Commission on Election Integrity to curb election meddling. He knows what allies can do when they work together and he is right to rally the democratic world. A global summit is a first step to putting freedom back on the front foot.

Quando partimos, a única coisa que deixamos é o nome

All our lives we need to be able to awaken in other good feelings, to be kind, to be able to soften life (even in the worst moments), so that when our ‘evening’ comes, we can close our eyes and be a good memory in someone’s life.

Pensamentos.me/VEM comigo!

Jim Ratcliffe: Brexit backing-billionaire to build Grenadier SUV in France – CNN

El Paso officials ‘cautiously optimistic’ about decrease in hospitalizations, new COVID-19 cases

El Paso officials are “cautiously optimistic” about a noticeable decrease in new COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations. Further, they haven’t seen the traditional spike in cases following major holidays, and it’s been 13 days since Thanksgiving.

“The trend continues downward despite what we had seen 10 to 14 days after a holiday. Hopefully this is because people are following the recommendations we have made,” said El Paso City-County Health Authority Dr. Hector Ocaranza.

El Paso on Tuesday reported 500 new coronavirus cases and 126 extemporaneous confirmations from the Texas State Department of Public Health. By contrast, the county early last month was seeing one-day spikes of 1,423 (Nov. 6) and 3,538 (Nov. 4) cases. (Officials later revised that Nov. 4 number to over 1,500 and attributed the change to a data backlog.)

The Language of Friendships

Saania's diary - reflections, learnings, sparkles

In times of crisis and struggles, we all want someone to turn to. Relationships are important, and therefore friends are important. The word ‘Friendship’ doesn’t quite fit into a single definition, it’s a relationship that cannot be described using words.

Even though I am not a social butterfly, quality counts more for me than quantity does. While it’s good to cultivate a diverse network of friends and acquaintances, I have nurtured a few true friendships over the years.

When I find myself going through a hard time, my friends help me get through it. When I find myself not feeling good about myself, my friends are the ones who lift me up. When I find myself in between sobs, my friends are the ones who make me laugh. When the world turns its back at me, my friends are right there by my side. True friends are the ones who…
