Lake County at COVID-19 warning level as Illinois logs 2,818 more cases – Chicago Sun-Times

The 25 other warning-level counties mostly are clustered downstate: Case, Christian, Clay, Clinton, Coles, Crawford, Effingham, Fayette, Henderson, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Knox, Lee, Mason, Massac, Pulaski, Richland, Saline, Shelby, Union, Vermilion, Whiteside, Winnebago and Warren.

They’ve suffered outbreaks tied to weddings, funerals, college parties and other large events packed with young people. State health officials say they’ve “observed businesses blatantly disregarding mitigation measures, people not social distancing, gathering in large groups, and not using face coverings.”

COVID-19 cases in AZ dropped 75% after mask mandates, report says.

A stay-at-home order in Arizona expired May 15 and two weeks later — between June 1 and June 15 — the daily average number of COVID-19 cases jumped by 151%, the report says. The incubation period for a person exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus to develop COVID-19 is approximately two days to two weeks.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Arizona peaked between June 29 and July 2, stabilized between July 3 and July 12, and declined by approximately 75% between July 13 and August 7, the report says.

“Mitigation measures, including mask mandates, that are implemented and enforced statewide appear to have been effective in decreasing the spread of COVID-19 in Arizona,” the report says.

Nevada’s COVID-19 response director, after testing positive: ‘This virus is real’

Cage said he is feeling better than he was over the weekend and is grateful that the virus is not affecting him more severely. But he noted the more than 210,000 people across the U.S. who have died from the virus, calling COVID-19 “an extraordinary cause of death” and saying that to minimize its impact is “not only disrespectful to people who are dealing with this, to the most vulnerable, to people who represent demographics that are affected at a higher rate for various reasons … but it’s completely counter to the effort we should have from a national perspective.”

“We have a system in place and a good approach to this here,” Cage said, “and the more we can get people to take it seriously, I think the quicker we will be able to put all of this behind us.”

Why the hidden world of fungi is essential to life on Earth | Merlin Sheldrake

Fungi have long supported and enriched life on our planet. They must be protected as fiercely as animals and plants

As you read these words, fungi are changing the way that life happens, as they have done for more than a billion years. They are eating rock, making soil, digesting pollutants, nourishing and killing plants, surviving in space, inducing visions, producing food, making medicines, manipulating animal behaviour, and influencing the composition of the Earth’s atmosphere.

Fungi make up one of life’s kingdoms – as broad and busy a category as “animals” or “plants” – and provide a key to understanding our planet. Yet fungi have received only a small fraction of the attention they deserve. The best estimate suggests that there are between 2.2m and 3.8m species of fungi on the Earth – as many as 10 times the estimated number of plant species – meaning that, at most, a mere 8% of all fungal species have been described. Of these, only 358 have had their conservation priority assessed on the IUCN red list of threatened species, compared with 76,000 species of animal and 44,000 species of plant. Fungi, in other words, represent a meagre 0.2% of our global conservation priorities.
