Nearly ten months after the Covid-19 pandemic emerged, life in most countries in East and Southeast Asia has mostly returned to normal. Together, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and the People’s Republic of China (with Hong Kong) have never recorded more than 1,000 new infections a day since September, according to a recent US media report. Thus, bars and restaurants are bustling, concerts and sport events attract large crowds.[1] In the above mentioned four countries with their total population of nearly 1,6 billion, the pandemic is still under control. In fact, relevant surveys show infection rates of only three persons per 100,000 inhabitants in Japan, one person in South Korea and Singapore and 103 throughout China over the past week.
In reference to the global loss of prestige of Germany, the EU and the West, Economics Minister, Altmeier told the Asia-Pacific Conference on Monday, “We must prove that we can be just as effective in fighting the Corona crisis.”[12] CSU Secretary General Blume had previously stated, “The western, liberal system must prove that it also can deal with this kind of pandemic.”[13] How that is supposed to be done – given the current development of the pandemic in Germany – is not quite clear. Siemens CEO Kaeser, on the other hand, argued that, given the obvious defeat, in the fight against the pandemic, it is that much more important to stand up for “western values.”[14] This means that, to the extent that Germany sinks deeper into the second wave of infections, the greater the crescendo of agitation around anti-Chinese “values” can be expected.
Ó grandes oportunistas,
sobre o papel debruçados,
que calculais mundo e vida
em contos, doblas, cruzados,
que traçais vastas rubricas
e sinais entrelaçados,
com altas penas esguias
embebidas em pecados!
Ó personagens solenes
que arrastais os apelidos
como pavões auriverdes
seus rutilantes vestidos,
todo esse poder que tendes
confunde os vossos sentidos:
a glória, que animais, é desses
que por vós são perseguidos.
Levantai- vos dessas mesas,
saí das vossas molduras,
vede que masmorras negras,
que fortaleza seguras,
que duro peso de algemas
que profundas sepulturas
nascidas de vossas penas,
de vossas assinaturas!
Considerado no mistério
dos.
Considerai no mistério
dos humanos desatinos,
e no polo sempre incerto
dos homens e dos desatinos!
Por sentenças, por decretos,
pereciveis divinos:
e hoje sois, no tempo eterno,
como ilustres assassinos.
Ó soberbos titulares,
tão desdenhosos e altivos!
Por fictícia austeridade,
vãs razões, falsos motivos,
inutilmente matastes:
vossos mortos são mais vivos;

”The name of that song is cursed Mississippi
And I want to say every word.

Hunting dogs on my trail
Schoolchildren sit in prison
Black cat crosses my path
I think every day will be my last
Lord, have mercy on this land of mine
We will all pick you up at the right time
I don’t belong here
I don’t belong there
I even stopped believing in prayer… ”

Cães de caça em meu rastro
Crianças em idade escolar sentam- se na prisão
Gato preto cruza o meu caminho
Eu acho que todo dia vai ser meu último
Senhor, tem piedade nesta minha terra
Nós todos vamos buscá-lo no momento certo
Eu não pertenço aqui
Eu não pertenço lá
Eu parei até de acreditar em oração…”

The justices voted 5-3 to lift an injunction of the curbside voting ban, with Chief Justice John Roberts joining court’s conservative bloc and the liberal justices dissenting. While the majority did not include the legal reasoning underlying the decision, Justice Sonia Sotomayor penned a brief yet biting dissent to the “shadow docket” ruling.

During yesterday’s “#EndSARS” protests in Lagos, the commercial capital, part of the TVC News channel’s studios and several of its cars were set ablaze, while gunmen on motorcycles invaded the headquarters of The Nation, one of the most popular privately-owned newspapers, and set fire to its facade. Both of these media outlets are linked to Bola Tinubu, a former Lagos State governor who is a national leader of the All Progressive Congress, Nigeria’s ruling party. According to the information obtained by RSF, at least three other broadcast media – Channels Television, Africa Independent Television and Ray Power Radio – were forced to suspend broadcasting after similar attacks in Lagos and Benin City.
Many journalists have also been physically attacked, either by violent protesters or police officers, since the start of these major protests, in which dozens of people have been killed. On 11 October, Daily Trust reporter Gimba Kakanda was roughed up inside a police station in Abuja, the capital, after being arrested. He said the police punctured the tyres of his car, threw his phone to the ground and threatened to kill him. RSF has so far registered 12 attacks against journalists since the start of these protests.

A survey of healthcare and public service providers in Norway shows high rates of mental health problems, especially among those with direct COVID-19 patient care, highlighting the need for mental health monitoring and support.
Previous studies have identified higher rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among healthcare workers during pandemics due to fear of infection, higher patient deaths, responsibility for difficult decisions, and disruption of social support. The risk of pandemic-associated mental health problems has also been shown to be higher for women, younger workers, people previously diagnosed as having a mental disorder, and those lacking social support.
Illinois continues to experience a resurgence of the coronavirus, with the state now averaging more than 4,000 positive diagnoses a day over the past week and a record high number of newly confirmed daily cases announced Thursday.
By one estimate, about half the decline is due to other factors. They include shifting onto other programs for longer-term unemployment and dropping out of the labor force.

in the year 597, St. Augustine had to be sent to instruct the Anglo-Saxons in Christianity, as if all knowledge and remembrance of it had died out of the land.
Chapter 5, 296 AD to 410 AD – Christianity in Britain – Continued
Various accounts are given as to the time when, and the persons by whom, the gospel was first introduced, some claiming St. Paul, others St. Peter, or Joseph of Arimathea, or the disciples of Polycarp, as the instruments by whom the gospel was first preached; and fixing different dates, from A.D. 43 downwards. A legend existed in the time of Bede, who wrote in the seventh century, that in the year 156, Lucius, king of the Britons, sent ambassadors to the pope Eleutherius, beseeching him to issue a mandate that he might be made a Christian, and afterwards he obtained the object of his pious petition, and the Britons preserved immaculate and sound, in peace and tranquillity, the faith which they had received, until the reign of the emperor Diocletian.
Modern writers have tried to account for…
