Ex- GOP lawmaker charged with assaulting poll worker

“He was on one side, and I said, ‘Well, I’ll just go around you,’” Pendleton said. “So I went around, he jumped over in front of me about 3 feet (away) mouth to mouth. I pushed him back because I don’t want to get COVID-19.” Gary Sims, Wake County’s elections director, and Pat Gannon, a spokesman for the State Board of Elections, confirmed the incident had taken place. Sims said poll workers should never be faced with violence. “Nobody comes to work expecting to be assaulted,” Sims said. Law enforcement arrived after the polls opened and cited Pendleton with the Class 3 misdemeanor. He then left the early voting site. Pendleton said the officers who cited him compared his violation to “hunting without a hunting license.” The Wake County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the incident. Pendleton will not be permitted to serve as a poll observer for the rest of this election cycle, Gannon said. He plans to appeal the assault charge in court. The North Carolina Republican Party condemned Pendleton’s actions and expressed apologies on his behalf.

Trump falsely accuses Ilhan Omar of entering the US illegally and marring her brother in wild rally speech | The Independent (sick and racist President)

Donald Trump falsely accused Ilhan Omar of entering the US illegally and marrying her own brother in a wild campaign speech.

The president launched another racist attack against the Minnesota congresswoman as he accused her of “hating” America during his latest rally in Ocala, Florida.

“If you look at the House with Pelosi, it’s like they hate Israel, and they believe in Omar who came in here and married her brother or something, and came in illegally,” he said.

“Come on Justice, let’s go Justice, Department of Justice.”

Trump’s Executive Order Results in Texas State Freezing Diversity Training

The California GOP first said Wednesday it would not comply with the order, noting it had used similar boxes in the past and saying it was ready to go to court over the issue. But in a response to Padilla before Friday’s announcement, the party said it would ramp up security measures, including having an official attend the boxes whenever the public has access to them, ensuring they are secured and ballots are delivered within 72 hours, and ceasing their representation of the boxes as “official.”

Corey F. Benbow, a graduate student at Texas State and president of the Underrepresented Student Advisory Council, told the Tribune that he found the move to be disheartening.

For Benbow, it’s yet another questionable move by the university following their failure to denounce white supremacist propaganda on campus and arresting students of color last year during a protest.

“This is why diversity programs and this type of training is so important, because it provokes thought and it allows the administration to really embed in their faculty and staff that this is something that is important to Texas State,” Benbow told the Tribune,

COVID-19 and Excess All-Cause Mortality in the US and 18 Comparison Countries | Global Health | JAMA | JAMA Network

Compared with other countries, the US experienced high COVID-19–associated mortality and excess all-cause mortality into September 2020. After the first peak in early spring, US death rates from COVID-19 and from all causes remained higher than even countries with high COVID-19 mortality. This may have been a result of several factors, including weak public health infrastructure and a decentralized, inconsistent US response to the pandemic.4,5 Source: COVID-19 and Excess All-Cause Mortality in the US and 18 Comparison Countries | Global Health | JAMA | JAMA Network

exactly when did a person die and from what cause? How many deaths were attributable to that cause? These straightforward questions can be challenging to answer, and their answers reveal only part of the effects of a disease on a family, community, and nation, as is the case with deaths from the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. How Bad Will Coronavirus Be This Winter? Model Projects 170,000 More US Deaths: LAist

“We were really hoping to crater the cases in preparation for a bad winter,” says Tara Smith, a professor of epidemiology at Kent State University. “We’ve done basically the opposite.”

After hitting an all-time high in July, cases did drop significantly, but the U.S. never reached a level where the public health system could truly get a handle on the outbreak.

Now infections are on the rise again.
