3 Central Florida schools closed due to COVID-19 cases

More and more COVID closure news is not sitting well with parents whose children are doing in-person learning.

“I really worry someday maybe she can catch it,” said parent Wilderme Delicir.

“I have my son doing face-to-face as well and I hope that doesn’t come out of his school. No cases so far and I hope to keep it that way,” Edward said.

Harmony Middle School in Osceola County is also set to return next Monday after 12 teachers tested positive last month.

On Sunday, Olympia High School in Orange County announced its closure for two weeks with six positive cases and one pending.

Oklahoma State vs. Tulsa game postponed a week after COVID-19 cases disrupt Golden Hurricane practices – CBSSports.com

The scheduled Sept. 12 game between Oklahoma State and Tulsa has been pushed back a week due to disruptions in preseason practice caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The game will instead be played the following week in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on Sept. 19, per a release from Tulsa on Monday night.

“The safety and health of our student-athletes is always at the core of all of our discussions and decisions. Without time to properly prepare physically we would be putting our student-athletes at a greater risk of injury,” said Tulsa AD Derrick Gragg in the release. “An open date for both schools presented us with the opportunity to reschedule the game for a week later. I’m appreciative of Mike Holder and Oklahoma State University for their cooperation in coming to this decision.”

Pastor holds prayer rally in defiance of coronavirus health guidelines at the California State Capitol – CBS News (more profiteering than loving others for this one)

Infectious disease expert, Dr. Dean Blumberg, said it’s possible that there were many people at the gathering who were potentially infectious, who were either pre-symptomatic or asymptomatic, and could transmit COVID-19 to others.

“That’s really a recipe for transmission and can lead to further outbreaks not only among the people who are in attendance but their contacts, too,” Blumberg said.

Address Military Redundancy

In Saner Thought

These days of an ever expanding Defense budget and no plan to try and rein in the out of control spending….I had a thought…..

I have often asked myself the question about the amount of redundancy within the US military.

3 service Air Force, 4 separate special ops, on and on…….

Take armor for instance….the Army has its force and the Marines have theirs…..why?

Why not have one Air Force, 1 special ops, one armor?

Well the Marines have decided to end their armor program…..

Marine Corps M1A1 Abrams tanks of the 2nd Tank Battalion left Camp Lejeune, N.C., for the last time this week as part of the service’s sweeping modernization plan that envisions a more agile force.

Tank units on the East and West coasts shuttered this month and began hauling their armor to military depots, the service said.

The Marine Corps will eventually divest of all three…

9 vaccine makers sign safety pledge in race for Covid-19 vaccine – CNN

The companies that signed the pledge include AstraZeneca, BioNTech, Moderna, Pfizer, Novavax, Sanofi, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson and Merck.
The nine companies on Tuesday wrote that they pledge to “Only submit for approval or emergency use authorization after demonstrating safety and efficacy through a Phase 3 clinical study that is designed and conducted to meet requirements of expert regulatory authorities such as FDA.”
“With increasing public concerns about the processes we are using to develop these vaccines, and even more importantly, the processes that will be used to evaluate these vaccines, we saw it as critical to come out and reiterate our commitment that we will develop our products, our vaccines, using the highest ethical standards and the most scientific [rigorous] processes,” Bourla said.

Anti-Asian Racism During the Pandemic – LA Progressive

This hate transcends garden-variety street racism, and watchdogs of hate groups say it is tacitly encouraged by the White House. Consequently, civil rights and social justice organizations are forming national, multiracial coalitions. They recognize that a broad, coalescing force is necessary to counter attacks and address the deep inequities responsible for disproportionate death rates. Above all, they want to take control of distorted narratives about their communities that are now exacerbated by this pandemic.

Missing Belarus opposition figures turn up at Ukraine border, one said to have been detained

Three Belarusian opposition politicians, including protest leader Maria Kolesnikova, who disappeared on Monday, have passed border control at the Belarusian-Ukrainian border, an official of the Belarusian border guard service said.

Kolesnikova, a presidium member of the opposition Coordination Council, disappeared in Minsk on Monday after she was seen being bundled into a van by unidentified men in black wearing masks. Two of her allies disappeared later, the opposition movement has said.

The Belarusian State Border Committee later said that Kolesnikova was detained trying to cross the border while the other two had entered Ukraine. Ukraine’s State Border Service also said that Kalesnikava did not enter Ukraine, and that her two allies entered the country. An official of the Belarusian border guard service said later confirmed that all three politicians have passed the border.

Belarus has been rocked by weeks of protests after president Alexander Lukashenko, who has led the country since 1994, won a landslide victory in the August 9 election. The vote was denounced by EU officials, and forced Lukashenko to look to Moscow for support.

The opposition says that Lukashenko’s main challenger, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, was the rightful winner and wants new elections. Tikhanovskaya, who fled to Lithuania after the vote, won only about 10% to Lukashenko’s 80%, according to the election committee.

Human rights activists accuse Belarusian riot police of brutally suppressing peaceful marches in the country. The government has denied the claims.

On Monday, the EU’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell had called on authorities in Belarus to release all opposition figures and protesters: “It is clear that the State authorities in Belarus continue to intimidate or allow intimidation of its citizens in an increasingly lawless way and crudely violate both their own domestic laws and international obligations”, he said.
