The United Kingdom recorded 3,991 new daily coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of daily cases to 378,219, government data showed on Wednesday.
The daily figure is the highest since May 8, when the country was only beginning to emerge from lockdown, and there were 4,649 new cases reported. There were also 20 new deaths from COVID-19, according to the latest figures.
The UK has struggled to measure the spread of Covid-19 through the population because of shortages of tests and delays at the labs that check the samples.
Authorities attributed the rise in infections to the fact that Britain’s testing capacity has also grown since the peak of the first wave.
Prime minister Boris Johnson announced that he plans to boost testing to 500,000 a day by the end of October to avoid a second national lockdown.
