Eroded confidence, but no impact on contact tracing The change, made without any rationale or explanation, further erodes the scientific community’s confidence in the CDC. For months, the story has been more—not less—testing could only help control the world’s worst outbreak of the virus. “If this is coming from HHS, it really undermines the CDC,” said Amesh Adalja, MD, a senior scholar with the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security. “I can think of no reason you wouldn’t want people to access the test if they think there’s good reason you need one,” said Emily Gurley, PhD, an epidemiologist with the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins. “If nationally the CDC were making the argument that we have to make this decision because of limited tests, that’s one thing, but there’s no evidence or real justification provided.”
In a mindboggling and dangerous move, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this week quietly reversed its recommendation on COVID-19 testing for those exposed to the virus. Now, the CDC says that exposed but symptomless people do not need to be tested. From a report:The change immediately alarmed and outraged public health and infectious disease experts. It is well established that SARS-CoV-2 — the pandemic coronavirus that causes the disease COVID-19 — can cause completely asymptomatic infections in some and spread from other infected people before they develop symptoms (so-called “pre-symptomatic transmission”). In fact, some modeling studies have suggested that pre-symptomatic transmission may account for nearly half, or even more, of SARS-CoV-2 spread.
That information previously spurred the CDC to recommend testing for anyone that was known to have — or even suspected to have — close contact with an infected person (that is, be within six feet for 15 or more minutes). “Testing is recommended for all close contacts of persons with SARS-CoV-2 infection,” the agency said on its website as recently as August 22. “Because of the potential for asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic transmission, it is important that contacts of individuals with SARS-CoV-2 infection be quickly identified and tested.”Source: In Alarming Move, CDC Says People Exposed To COVID-19 Do Not Need Testing – Slashdot

Our executive branch is indeed dominating (one of Trump’s favorite verbs) our legislative branch. Laws such as the Veteran’s Memorial Preservation Act with 10-year sentences for vandalizing monuments are being employed to pacify dissent. Unidentifiable federal agents kitted out like Star Wars stormtroopers are flooding American cities also with the intent of squashing protests through violent “rigid control.”
Unlike Russia, we have an opportunity at this November’s elections to begin what will be an arduous ascent back toward democracy. But this time, we need to discard those false illusions of what America stands for and, instead, imagine a democracy truer to its original intent, one that offers equal voice and opportunity to all, no matter their race, religion, sexual orientation, or economic status.
A report from Hong Kong provides the first credible evidence that it’s possible to catch the virus twice. Some immunologists are breathing a sigh of relief.
