Gargling solution flies off Japan’s shelves after governor touts anti-coronavirus effect, East Asia News & Top Stories – The Straits Times – (ready to believe politician, “star”, faker before science… why? Leaders in all sectors have ignored public for ages?)

Japanese drugstores were stripped bare of gargling solution on Wednesday (Aug 5), a day after the governor of the western prefecture of Osaka suggested it could help fight coronavirus, triggering panicked buying reminiscent of the early days of mask shortages.

Hundreds of thousands of people posted pictures of emptied shelves on Twitter, accompanied by handwritten “Out of Stock” notices, as they canvassed suggestions on how to acquire the coveted antiseptic.

More businesses in India re-open even as Covid-19 cases surge

tl-india-e-050820.jpg?itok=Wgc0vIvp

MUMBAI (REUTERS) – India reported on Wednesday (Aug 5) 52,509 new cases of coronavirus, taking its tally of infections to more than 1.91 million, nevertheless authorities eased restrictions aimed at limiting its spread, allowing gyms and yoga studios to open.

India is one of the world’s hardest-hit countries, with nearly 40,000 people dead of Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

But the health ministry said India’s fatality rate was now 2.10 per cent, the lowest since the outbreak first appeared.

The government has been struggling to stop the spread of the virus while also trying to minimise the economic damage and the hardships lockdowns inflict on the poor.

Authorities in the financial hub of Mumbai allowed shops in malls to re-open after more than four months of lockdown, as the number of cases in the city that was hard hit by the outbreak has begun to slowly decline.

Cinemas remain closed and restaurants in most parts of the country are offering only limited services.

On testing for the virus, the ministry said 15,119 tests were being conducted for every million people.

Coronavirus: Vietnam says contagion ‘under control’ in virus epicentre but has spread elsewhere, SE Asia News & Top Stories – The Straits Times

A new coronavirus outbreak in Vietnam spread to two more provinces on Wednesday (Aug 5), the country’s Health Minister said, as the Covid-19 task force declared the contagion “under control” in the central city where the outbreak began.

Aggressive contact-tracing, targeted testing and strict quarantining had helped Vietnam contain earlier outbreaks, but it is now battling infections in at least 10 cities and provinces, after going more than three months without domestic transmission.

The Military Is Sick – LA Progressive

You would think that, as my husband enters his third year of “shore duty” as a Pentagon staffer, the immediate dangers of military service would finally be negligible. No such luck. Since around mid-June, as President Trump searched for scapegoats like the World Health Organization for his own Covid-19 ineptitude and his concern over what rising infection rates could mean for his approval ratings, he decided that it was time to push this country to “reopen.”

As it turned out, that wouldn’t just be a disaster for states from Florida to California, but also meant that the Pentagon resumed operations at about 80% capacity. So, after a brief reprieve, my spouse is now required to report to his office four days a week for eight-hour workdays in a poorly ventilated, crowded hive of cubicles where people neither consistently mask nor social distance.

My husband, in other words, is now unnecessarily risking his own and his family’s exposure to a virus that has to date claimed more than 150,000 American lives — already more than eight times higher than the number of Americans who died in both the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the endless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that followed.

Your Mail-In Vote

Vote like the life of democracy and your family depends on it – because it does!

In Saner Thought

There is a problem these days….voting will be a bitch and the solution that many have offered is that of a mail-in vote and of course that will not fit into the plan for Trump….he and his ilk are saying that a mail-in vote would be riddled with fraud.

He much prefers absentee voting.

Think about that for a minute.

Your ballot comes in the mail ……you fill it out…..then you mail it in…..

Do I need to let that sink in?

Let me help and explain a bit about mail-in voting…..

Vote-by-mail, mail-in voting, and absentee voting are essentially the same thing. We use these terms interchangeably. They all mean that a voter is submitting a ballot through the mail.

The process is fairly standard. First, a voter needs to apply for an absentee ballot if one has not automatically been sent in the mail. Once local election officials…
