Highest levels of PFAS in Miami, Philadelphia and New Orleans, report by environmental watchdog finds

The contamination of US drinking water with manmade “forever chemicals” is far worse than previously estimated with some of the highest levels found in Miami, Philadelphia and New Orleans, said a report on Wednesday by an environmental watchdog group.

The chemicals, resistant to breaking down in the environment, are known as perfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS. Some have been linked to cancers, liver damage, low birth weight and other health problems.

Anti-Vax Coronavirus Conspiracy Theories

Why do some folks think that the 2019 novel coronavirus is a man, made patented virus that is being spread to push a mandatory vaccination program?

A new anti-vaccine conspiracy theory is born, this one about the 2019 novel coronavirus.Robert F Kennedy, Jr leads Children’s Health Defense…

Yup, the usual suspects.

Anti-Vax Coronavirus Conspiracy Theories

As you are likely aware, the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) was first identified in the city of Wuhan, China. It has since spread outside Wuhan, including at least one case in the United States.

Why is this a concern?

Some of the other human coronaviruses that have been recently discovered cause severe disease, including MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV.

So what’s the new conspiracy theory?

A patent for a poultry vaccine is not evidence for a conspiracy theory about the 2019 novel coronavirus.A patent for a poultry vaccine is not evidence for a conspiracy theory about the 2019 novel coronavirus.

That someone attenuated a coronavirus (weakened it) to use it in a vaccine and that this attenuated coronavirus somehow became the 2019 novel coronavirus that started the outbreak in Wuhan, China.

How do we know that this isn’t true?

“Preliminary analysis showed that the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) clusters with the SARS-related CoV clade and differs from the core genome of known bat CoV.”

For one thing, it isn’t the same virus that is described in the patent!

Folks should also know that animal vaccines for coronaviruses aren’t new. Why didn’t any of them revert and cause outbreaks?

“In the early 1950s, the first IB vaccine was developed in the USA using the van Roekel M41 (Mass) strain.”

Cook et al on The long view: 40 years of infectious bronchitis research

What about the idea that we will soon be getting a new Chinese coronavirus vaccine?

Here's how the game is played. It is all about conspiracy theories with these folks...Here’s how the game is played. It is all about conspiracy theories with these folks…

Several biotech companies have already said that they will be working on a 2019-nCoV vaccine, but it is important to note that despite years and years of work, we still don’t have vaccines for MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV.

SARS-CoV has been around since 2002…

While development of a quick 2019-nCoV vaccine will be great if this virus gets out of control, that doesn’t seem to be the way things happen…

Know what else isn’t new?

Make no mistake: Poland and Hungary aren’t the only EU states abusing the law | Agata Gostyńska-Jakubowska

Countries from Britain to Greece are guilty of democratic backsliding. And that threatens the integrity of the EU itself

Mention concerns about the rule of law in certain EU countries, and people, even EU officials, automatically assume you are referring to Hungary and Poland. Without doubt, the state of democracy in both countries is worrying. Buoyed by strong electoral mandates, their populist governing parties are interfering with the independence of the judiciary and increasing state control of other institutions, including the media. But an equally worrying trend is less talked about. The decline in respect for the rule of law is happening elsewhere in the EU – indeed, it is an EU-wide issue and it has the potential to undermine the functioning of the entire bloc.

Planned Parenthood chief: we have to ‘undo the damage’ of abortion bans in the Trump era

Find a Senator with enough guts to offer a bill to create a Constitutional Amendment to absolutely legalize abortion. Then forget Supreme Court and not allow states to pass a law or regulation against the Constitution.

Alexis McGill Johnson is focusing on systemic issues in her fight against the wave of abortion bans sweeping across the US

The Planned Parenthood president, Alexis McGill Johnson, was stuck on the tarmac in Washington DC, and not happy about it. She’d raced to catch a flight and now she was sitting in the stale air of a plane grounded by stormy weather. Then, the woman next to her asked a question common among strangers: “What do you do?”

“I work for Planned Parenthood,” Johnson said, and the woman asked, “Did they ever find a president?” Well, actually, they did, Johnson replied.

Trump downplays brain injuries suffered by US troops in Iran missile strike

He has no clue about what he is saying – just the hack salesman trying to downplay any problems with his brand and policies!

‘I heard they had headaches … but it’s not very serious,’ Trump said after 11 service members were treated for concussion symptoms

Donald Trump has downplayed the brain injuries suffered by US personnel in Iran’s missile attacks on bases where they were stationed earlier this month, as the military announced additional troops were being flown from Iraq for treatment for possible injuries and that more may follow.

Though the US president initially said no US troops were harmed in the 8 January attack on two Iraqi bases housing them, the Pentagon announced last week that 11 service members had been flown to medical hospitals in Germany and Kuwait to be “treated for concussion symptoms from the blast”.
