There are many reasons not to impeach Trump. The House should do it anyway | Robert Reich

It’s important to uphold the constitution through impeachment – even if it goes nowhere, even if it’s unpopular with many voters, even if it’s politically risky

It’s a constitutional crisis all right. So what happens now? An impeachment inquiry in the House won’t send Trump packing before election day 2020 because Senate Republicans won’t convict him of impeachment.

So the practical political question is whether a House impeachment inquiry helps send him packing after election day.

System of Checks and Balances Just Broke | La Prensa San Diego

Since the founding of our country and the passage of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, we have believed in the political ideal that no one person or branch of government could run roughshod over the others. Today, that has proven not to be true. Our country is weaker for it, and the beacon of freedom the world has looked to shines less bright now. These actions will surely set a standard for future presidents, and will should serve as a lesson to us all. Elections matter. Vote carefully, for the next president will be stronger, bolder, and more likely to go it alone against Congress and the public because there don’t seem to be any repercussions. Our system of checks and balances is out of whack with no fix in sight. Lesson learned.

Inoreader – Biden Is The Man! (?)

Recent criticism of Joe Biden for praising Dick Cheney as “a decent man” and Mike Pence as “a decent guy” merely scratches the surface of what’s wrong with the current frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination. His compulsion to vouch for the decency of Republican leaders — while calling Donald Trump an “aberration” — is consistent with Biden’s political record. It sheds light on why he’s probably the worst Democrat running for president. After several decades of cutting corporate-friendly deals with GOP legislators — often betraying the interests of core Democratic constituencies in the process — Biden has a big psychological and political stake in denying that the entire GOP agenda is repugnant.

The Guardian finds that none of the state’s largest school districts plan to allow teachers to carry weapons

Florida’s new law allowing teachers to carry guns in their classrooms is largely impotent, research by the Guardian has found, with dozens of school districts across the state rejecting the controversial measure.

Ron DeSantis, the Florida governor, signed the bill into law on Wednesday that expands a campus “armed guardian” program established in the wake of the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school massacre to include trained teacher volunteers.

BBC Fires Danny Baker Over Racist Royal Baby Tweet – The New York Times

“To post a pic picturing a 3-day-old baby of mixed heritage as a monkey, then claim it was a joke?” she wrote in tweet. “That’s old-school prejudice and racism at its peak. And for a trusted broadcaster working at a public service broadcaster to feed that prejudice? It’s unacceptable.” Mr. Baker has been fired from broadcasting jobs before, including at Radio 5 Live. The station previously dropped him in 1997, after he said on a soccer show that he would understand if fans physically attacked a referee. But he appeared unrepentant after his dismissal on Thursday, describing the BBC’s phone call to inform him of the decision as “a masterclass of pompous faux-gravity.”
