Donald Trump’s inauguration concert: Jennifer Holliday backs out of performance, apologises to fans – US election 2016 – ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Singer Jennifer Holliday has backed out as a performer at next week’s presidential inaugural welcome concert, saying she did not realise that her participation would be interpreted as a statement of support for President-elect Donald Trump.Holliday, best known for her Tony-winning role in Broadway’s Dreamgirls, faced pressure from her gay, lesbian and black fans when it was announced she would sing at the concert at Washington’s Lincoln Memorial.Holliday said in a statement on Saturday (local time) that she apologised for her lapse of judgment, for being uneducated on the issues and causing heartbreak for her fans.”My only choice must now be to stand with the LGBT community and to state unequivocally that I will not perform for the welcome concert or for any of the inauguration festivities!” she wrote in a letter to her fans.”Please know that I hear you and I feel your pain. The LGBT community was mostly responsible for birthing my career and I am deeply indebted to you,” she added.”You have loved me faithfully and unconditionally and for so many years you provided me with work even though my star had long since faded.”
