Two NYPD officers were shot during a car chase-turned-shootout in Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn early Saturday morning. But authorities said today that the injured officers, 29-year-old Andrew Yurkiw and 33-year-old William Reddin, may have actually been struck by friendly fire: “It’s quite possible both officers were struck by bullets from other officers, and possibly deflected bullets,” said Deputy Commissioner Stephen Davis, noting that the officers at the scene fired over 30 shots. A group of 20-30 apparently drunken onlookers applauded as fire took hold in a former hotel being converted into home for asylum seekers, in a suspected arson attack in the town of Bautzen in Saxony state overnight. Some members of the group also tried to impede the work of firefighters dispatched to the scene, police said. A police spokesman said that the group showed “unabashed delight” at the blaze and made “disparaging comments” about the efforts to contain it.
