{Ten extra points if you can guess what happens to a variety of air pollutants – grin} “Summertime wildfires in Alaska and Canada occur every year, with some inter-annual variations,” said Hiren Jethva, an atmospheric scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. But the distance traveled by the smoke varies greatly. Aerosol concentration and height, as well as wind patterns and speed, are just some of the factors that determine the course of a plume’s atmospheric journey.

Jethva and colleagues first used the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on NASA’s Aura satellite to observe the long-range transport of the July 2015 plumes. Jethva noted that the plumes were often located over lower-level clouds for much of the period shown above. Researchers have found that when aerosols are located over clouds, or any other bright surface, they can impart a net warming effect on the climate. That, in turn, can affect the stability of the atmosphere and the lifetime of clouds.

Schäuble Pushed for a Grexit and Backed Merkel into a Corner – SPIEGEL ONLINE

He then inhaled, flashing a pugnacious smile and turned his wheelchair around. He then prepared for battle of a kind he had never before fought in his long political career — a battle against the Greek government, against American economists, against large swathes of European public opinion and also, to some extent, against the chancellor herself.

Had it been up to Schäuble, Germany would have shown the Greeks the euro-zone door long ago. His problem, however, is that the chancellor doesn’t share this sentiment. Merkel rejects his insistence because she doesn’t want to go down in history as the government leader responsible for the disintegration of Europe.

If it were any other minister that had so persistently refused to endorse her line, she would likely have got rid of him long ago. But she can’t do that with Schäuble. His hard line is precisely what makes him so popular among the Germans.

77-Year-Old Polish Watchmaker Evicted From Her Greenpoint Shop After 26 Years: Gothamist

Sokol shrugged off Trzaskowska’s eviction as a byproduct of gentrification. “Is this case really so strange in Williamsburg or Greenpoint? You see that on Manhattan Avenue, the prices are going up. This is how the neighborhood is changing.”

Although Trzaskowska would like to find a new shop, she admits that rents are too high. For now, she’s preoccupied with the whereabouts and safety of her tools and supplies. “It simply means I’ve lost everything,” she said.

Recalling the chimpanzee fortune teller that now occupies her shop, Trzaskowska shook her head. “They should have killed me.”
