Citizens need protecting, and not only by English laws

Lawyers, scholars and citizens will gather on Monday night at the British Library to examine the iconic power of a wrinkled piece of parchment, covered with faded, semi-legible medieval script, now 800 years old. We like to think Magna Carta has this power because it represents the beginning of what we hold in common. It may be iconic for the opposite reason: because it frames fundamental disagreements and forces us to understand just how far back these disagreements run.

Its key clauses lay out the lineaments of the rule of law, but this principle divides us, because the question remains: whose law? This argument is at the heart of modern British politics. On one side, mostly, but not exclusively, conservative, are those who think Magna Carta inaugurated a tradition of freedom that is distinctively British, or should I say, English, since it is unclear if the Scots and Welsh feel their liberties flow from the same source.

Social activist ‘surprised but delighted’ to join top cardinal in high-level environment conference at the Vatican

She is one of the world’s most high-profile social activists and a ferocious critic of 21st-century capitalism. He is one of the pope’s most senior aides and a professor of climate change economics. But this week the secular radical will join forces with the Catholic cardinal in the latest move by Pope Francis to shift the debate on global warming.

Naomi Klein and Cardinal Peter Turkson are to lead a high-level conference on the environment, bringing together churchmen, scientists and activists to debate climate change action. Klein, who campaigns for an overhaul of the global financial system to tackle climate change, told the Observer she was surprised but delighted to receive the invitation from Turkson’s office.

Greek Strategy

“We exhausted every limit of concessions so there could be an agreement,” Tsipras said. “Perhaps some saw that as a weakness.”

He said the Greek people would vote against a deal on June 5.

“This no will also be a big yes, a big yes to the decision of the Greek government to reject an ultimatum that insults the Greek people.”

ASIA/HOLY LAND – “New” jihadist acronym threatens Christians in Jerusalem

Jerusalem – Some leaflets containing threats to Christians in Jerusalem and signed by an unknown organization calling itself “Islamic state in Palestine” – with the clear intention of showing their affiliation or proximity to the Islamic State – were found on Thursday evening, June 25 in some Arab neighborhoods in the eastern part of the Holy City. According to reports by the Israeli media, in the leaflets the Christians in Jerusalem are threatened with death if they do not leave the city before 18 July, the day in which the feast of Eid al Fitr falls this year, at the end of the holy month of Ramadan. In the message – that also contains threats against Palestinian Authority President Mahmud Abbas – Christians are called “agents of Israel”.
The message of intimidation contained in the leaflets caused immediate reactions by Michel Sabbah, Patriarch Emeritus of Jerusalem of the Latins, and Archbishop Theodosios of Sebastia, of the Greek-Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem. “No one knows who distributed the leaflets”, says to Agenzia Fides Fr. Raed Abusahliah, Director General of Caritas Jerusalem. “Of course the episode has spread concern among some Christians. Some of them ask themselves: how can these fools have come this far?”. Father Raed points out that “Muslims reacted before Christians: many Muslim leaders have condemned the threats contained in the leaflets and said they will be the first to defend their Christian brothers, if something happens.
While many faithful Christians have said they will never leave the land of Christ, where they were born, before any threat”. The Director of Caritas Jerusalem also notes that “these acronyms and such groups are most probably supported and infiltrated by forces acting in the shadows. Maybe now some want to show that Christians are fragile and need some kind of ‘protection’ “.

Mid-Summer Auroras : Image of the Day

For the past two weeks, sunspot AR12371 has been crackling with flares, radio bursts, and solar storms as it has moved across the Earth-facing side of the Sun. Overnight on June 20-21, that active region launched a CME toward Earth that caused a severe geomagnetic storm on June 22-23. Skywatchers as far south as Texas reported aurora borealis on the horizon. Another flare burst from the region early on June 23 and may be connected with the activity shown at the top of this page. Still another Earth-directed CME exploded from the Sun on June 25, and space weather forecasters were anticipating more atmospheric light shows on June 27.

Auroras occur when solar flares and coronal mass ejections—or even strong solar wind streams—disturb and distort the magnetosphere, the space protected by Earth’s magnetic field. The collision of pressure waves and solar particles into the magnetosphere accelerates particles trapped in the space around Earth (such as in the radiation belts). Those particles flow down into Earth’s upper atmosphere (about 100 to 400 kilometers in altitude) where they excite oxygen and nitrogen molecules and release photons of light. The results are rays, sheets, and curtains of light in the sky centered around both of Earth’s magnetic poles.

GUARANI, BRAZIL-Gunmen have attacked and set ablaze a Guarani Indian community in southwest Brazil.

Initial reports indicated that a one year old baby had burned to death when the gunmen torched the Indians’ houses on June 24, but this has not subsequently been confirmed.

The Guarani fled the area, and two girls and one boy are reported to be missing.

The Indians of Kurusu Mba community peacefully re-occupied part of their ancestral land on June 22, having waited many years for it to be returned to them.

They were soon surrounded by gunmen who, according to one Guarani man, “fired shots above our heads.” The ranchers and farmers who now occupy almost all Guarani land frequently employ armed men to terrorize the Indians.

A Guarani spokesman said they occupied their land because
“We can no longer bear living with pesticides, hunger and waiting for the government [to act].”

Kurusu Mba has suffered many violent attacks in the past. Kurete Lopes, a 70 year old religious leader, was murdered by gunmen in 2007, as was another leader, Ortiz Lopes. Another man, Osvaldo Lopes, was murdered in 2009.Many Guarani are being subjected to brutal and intolerable attacks as they wait in vain for the authorities to recognize their land rights. In a video just sent by Guarani to Survival International, the global movement for tribal peoples’ rights, Tupã Guarani of Pyelito Kue community shows the remains of his house after it was burned down by gunmen. He says his family have lost all their belongings.

The community is hemmed in by soya plantations. Intensive pesticide spraying pollutes the streams the Indians use for drinking water

Stone thieves are dismantling Yorkshire’s heritage, warn police

stone-005.jpg

Thieves are taking prized items such as roof tiles, topping stones on dry stone walls and York stone paving slabs

Some of Yorkshire’s most beautiful rural areas are reporting a plague of stone thefts, with homes, schools, farms, churches and chapels all being targeted by thieves. The situation has become so dire that police have launched a PR drive to raise awareness of the threat to their region’s heritage.

Jason McCartney, Tory MP for Colne Valley, has warned that his constituency’s heritage is being “systematically dismantled”. During a debate on the problem in parliament, he said he was receiving weekly reports of stone thefts from West Yorkshire police. Many robberies take place in daylight with thieves posing as workmen in high-visibility jackets.
