Happy Birthday, Carmen Herrera!

We join El Museo del Barrio in wishing a very happy birthday to Cuban artist Carmen Herrera. The abstract, minimalist painter, who turned 100 years old yesterday, celebrated a solo show El Museo del Barrio in the fall of 1998. Today, one of her works [Blanco y Verde (1959)] is part of the Whitney Museum of American Art opening exhibition.

If the life story of Carmen Herrera was written as fiction, many people wouldn’t believe it. As Deborah Sontag wrote in a front page story for the New York Times Art & Design section in 2009: “In a word, Ms. Herrera, a nonagenarian homebound painter with arthritis, is hot.”
