How to grow an olive tree in a container | Green Prophet

Don’t have a garden? You can still own a fruiting olive tree, grown in a container. A sunny balcony and the right climate are the essential things; that, and time.

Italians have grown fruit trees in containers for centuries, keeping them protected in special sheds during the winter.

Come spring, the trees are wheeled out to the sunshine again. While we can dream of owning an olive grove like the one we visited in the Galilee, olive trees successfully grow in pots too.

Assuming your climate suits the olive, you should acquire a sapling from a nursery. Olive trees grown from pits revert to the original wild olive, and if they produce fruit at all, it will be wizened and not very good to eat. Consult the nursery manager and choose the variety you’d like best. To maximize fruiting potential, you should actually have two of the same variety in the area. This may be impractical where there’s limited space, of course.

Erdogan, entourage lose control in Soma – Al-Monitor: the Pulse of the Middle East

The most emotional photograph from the Soma mine disaster was of a rescued miner covered all in black laid on a stretcher. His rescuer wished him good luck, and the miner said, “Should I remove my boots, so they do not dirty the stretcher?” Millions of Turks cried watching this scene. In the midst of tragedy, to see a survivor worrying about “dirtying the stretcher” was a heart-stabbing moment.

Boko Haram threat: Leaders vow to wage ‘total war’ on ‘Al Qaeda of West Africa’ – ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

West African leaders have agreed to work together to wage “total war” on Boko Haram, saying the Nigerian Islamist group had become a regional Al Qaeda that threatened them all.

Nigeria, its neighbours – Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Benin – and Western officials met in Paris to flesh out a plan enabling them for the first time to share intelligence, coordinate action and monitor borders.

It comes as a suspected Boko Haram attack was carried out on a Chinese work site in northern Cameroon, killing at least one Cameroonian soldier with 10 others feared kidnapped.

Although Boko Haram has been fighting for five years, carrying out bombings and attacks on civilians and security forces, the kidnapping last month of more than 200 schoolgirls in the north-east has focused world attention on them.

Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan says Boko Haram is no longer a local threat, but has become West Africa’s Al Qaeda.

Doctors Reattach Teen’s Arm Severed Cleaning Pasta Machine: Gothamist

Last month, a teenager employed at an upstate NY Italian restaurant severed his arm while cleaning an industrial pasta maker. Brett Bouchard, 17, was cleaning the machine at Violi’s Restaurant on April 24th when his right arm became caught and was severed at the elbow. “It wasn’t a sharp cut,” one of his surgeons, Dr. Kyle Eberlin, told CBS. “His arm had actually been sort of pulled off which makes it a more difficult injury to treat.” Despite that, doctors were able to reattach the arm.
